Papa Bear

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

Yesterday morning, as I was packing my bag, Barry called his grandpa to wish him a happy birthday. It was a sweet conversation between grandson and grandfather, but what really got me was when Barry started describing me to his grandpa.

Hearing Barry talk about the pregnancy and my very apparent belly made me realize how much he does listen and pay attention. I think I forget how excited he is, not because we don’t talk about it, but more because I don’t get to hear Barry share his perspective with others as often as I’d like.

Hearing him describe the total and utter dance party that HBaby had the other night, along with other tidbits of information, brought a smile to my face…I’ve been doing that a lot lately because of him.

All Packed

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

Barry confessed this morning that when he had given me the information earlier this week about where we were going 2-3 hours might have been a bit of a stretch. We’ll get there in less than 2 hours because we’re going to…….

Seabeck!

I didn’t even know such a place existed and we’re both guessing that there might only be 1 stop sign and maybe a place to buy milk. We’ve got some new recipes to try out, books to read, shoes to stroll in, boats to float in (for the non-pregnant person in our party), and music to listen to, let the vacation begin!

Seabeck, here we come!

Come What May

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Yesterday was a really, really long day.

I burst into tears after a particular student did something awful – not sure if it was pregnancy induced or just simply heartbreaking.

Crying is something that drains me, maybe I should do it more often so my body doesn’t feel so shocked when it happens.

Yesterday my day ended with Chach, Brian & Barry at The Triple Door listening to Shawn Colvin.

I laughed out loud sitting at our table eating delicious dinner and waiting for the music to start.

Laughing is something that fills me up, maybe I should do it more often so my body doesn’t feel shocked when it happens.

Today is looking less long already.

Either way, with a soy milk hot chocolate in hand, I’m ready to conquer it.

Come what may: laughter or tears.

January Car Vs Bike

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

January was a successful month for less driving. By using my new Orca bus pass I was able to cut out my drives to the train station which meant zero solo trips in the car.

The monthly total was 59 miles biking to 0 miles driving. I’m happy with the result, but my bike is starting to show some of the miles.  It’s been two years since a full tune up, and about 5 since any parts have been replaced.  Lately, I’ve been tinkering with it before each ride but the results are mixed.  Time to have a pro look at it.  This morning I dropped it off at Gregg’s Cycles in Alderwood. I’ve always been happy with their work (they were voted Seattle’s best bicycle shop, so I don’t think I’m alone).  Plus, there’s a good chance of getting the bike back in one day. Very nice.

January was also much warmer than December, so there weren’t any new temperature readings to record.  I did grow out the beard, but it hasn’t really been necessary since this is the warmest January I can remember.

Training Day

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

We’ve got a house guest for the next few weeks and Sydney has to show him the ropes around HBHQ.

Lesson #1: How to Get Your Human to Open the Door for You

Perhaps tomorrow she’ll cover the topic of how to take a 12 hour nap.

It Never Gets Old

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

I really enjoy finding Sydney wrapped up in a blanket snoozing away, but it is really hard to resist interrupting her snooze to give her some pets. I’ve discovered that she’ll sleep though a few pats and pokes, but as soon as I quietly get up to walk away she looks at me wondering why I’ve stopped. So, I keep petting and she’s content once again.

Are You Loving It?

Monday, January 18th, 2010

This is a perfect picture of what Sydney looks like when she has made her way onto someone’s lap and is getting her pets. Her eyes are closed and she is l-o-v-i-n-g life.

As you can see, Barry doesn’t seem super upset that he’s got a 19.6 pound pup on his lap. I’m guessing by the look on Barry’s face that he is l-o-v-i-n-g life just as much.

I’m on Fire

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

A few weeks ago Barry and I caught the end of the Kennedy Center Honors and Bruce Springsteen was getting honored.

Ben Harper and Jennifer Nettles sang “I’m on Fire” and I can not get enough of this version. It is so beautiful. I have found myself just listening to the audio over and over again each morning while I putter around my classroom.

Give it a listen.
