A Special Friday Face

hb

Full Name: TBD. For now I just go by The Mini or Baby.

Age: not officially born yet. I’m just about to head into the second trimester. If everything goes according to plan, I should arrive at the end of April though.

Favorite Color: I’ve been seeing everything in black and white lately. I have a feeling I might lean towards either pink or blue in a few months.

Current Favorite Food: Chocolate milk and Hansen’s Soda. Yummy!

Favorite Place to Visit: I’d be cool with anywhere I can just take a breath of fresh air on my own. Although for some reason Sydney pops into my head like I’ve heard that name somewhere before.

Where do you see yourself in five years: Working as a line leader in kindergarten.

Friday Face: Guinevere Littlejohn

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Our Friday Face today is one of my favorite girls, Guinevere Littlejohn! Not only is she one of the most adorable five year olds, but she’s also brilliant! Big changes are coming for Gigi because she is days away from starting Kindergarten! She’ll be attending the same school that her mom, Tamara, and I teach at and I am beyond excited to see her cute little face pass by my window daily!  You can learn more about Guinevere and her family here.

I give you Guinevere!

clothes

Name: Guinevere Rose Littlejohn

Nicknames: Gigi, Rosie, Gigi Peegee, Bobo
Age: Five
Favorite color: Pink and purple.  I also have secret favorite colors.  They are green and blue and yellow.  They are secret because they are only for family and friends to know about.
gigi
Favorite movies: My favorite movies are Fairytopia and Sleeping Beauty.  I like those movies because they have my favorite kinds of fairies and princesses.
Kitties or puppies: Puppies because they grow up to be big and they stay with humans.  Cats are free.  They do what they want to.

donut

Favorite thing to do: My favorite thing to do is play with my Barbies.  I like to play wedding with them.  I also like to go to Disneyland.  My favorite ride there is Thunder Mountain Railroad.  I love it because it is really bumpy and fast.   It could blow your head off!  I also like to ride Winnie the Pooh and see the princesses.
baby
What scares you? Zombies.  They are freaky.
Do you have a best friend? Yes, Kiley and Sophie.  They are fun to play with.  We play Barbies and we like to play a lot of things that each other likes to do.
Favorite treat?  CHEETOS!  I don’t get to have them very often because they are not very healthy for you.  I like to have pronto pups (veggie hot dog wrapped with baked bread dough) for a healthy snack.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be a ballerina and a model because it seems really fun.  I am going to have to practice a lot to have that job.
judegigi
What is your favorite thing to do with your little brother? That’s an easy question.  Play baby.  I push him in my baby stroller and then we pretend it is time for his nap.  I put him on the couch and put blankets down.  Then I push him in the stroller again.  My little brother is hard when he is hitting.  When he hits, I tell him, “No Jude, that hurts.  Ouch.”  Then I put him in his bedroom for time out if he does it again.  He usually does hit me again.
ride
What are you most excited about with school starting? Knowing the teacher.  I’ll be at my Mama’s school so I know Mrs. Ross already.  I am also excited about getting to wear my new clothes, going to recess and new friends.  I will make friends really easy because I am really kind.
Best thing about being five: The best thing about being five is that I have my self control.  Self control is that I have control of myself, not like my brother.
One word that describes Gigi: Disneyland!

Friday Face: Joe Wilbur

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Our August Friday face is Joe Wilbur. I met Joe in high school when we sat next to each other in a Civics class. Lara and I were more interested in not paying attention and rallied the other classmates to play an Anacortes High School version of Saved by the Bell.

Joe’s role was AC Slater.

If we were to play a modern day of Saved by the Bell I’m certain that we’d have to make a new character for Joe to play. Since 1997 Joe has become a bit more tattooed, developed his musical talents and come to believe that whiskey is one of his great allies.

Here are some interesting things about Joe:

  • He makes amazingly beautiful guitars.
  • His family all shares his same smile.
  • He & Barry lived together and played baseball together.
  • He is really proud of his nephew.
  • He likes to bring a cooler full of food when he comes to a BBQ.
  • He’ll be turning 29 in few weeks, same day as Barry.
  • He’s a philosophy major.

I give you Joe……

Friday Face: Sean McCool

Friday, July 24th, 2009

After a longish hiatus Friday Face is back! Today our Friday Face, Sean, comes to us all the way from Iraq. Sean and his lovely wife, Christen, are both from Anacortes. I went to school with both of them and, well, I’m certain that they both love Anacortes as much as I do!  When I think of Sean I think of somebody that is really funny and smart. He was kind enough to help me revive the Friday Face!

You can learn more about Sean and Christen’s cute little family here!

Daydreaming, throwing things at stuff (deadly accurate with a rock aimed
at floating driftwood), and reading to the boys with silly voices.

sean2

What is your favorite book? When did you last read it?
Ender’s Game, 2 years ago.

What has been the most shocking news of your life?
“Sean, it doesn’t look good. Where are you so we can get you home?” I
was in northern Quebec watching the Columbia’s reentry on the internet.
I could tell something was wrong before they made the announcement and
called one of my Dad’s friends (also an astronaut) in Houston to find
out what was going on.

Unending, overflowing, unconditional love. And she’s BEAUTIFUL, like a
hot sexy elf. I guess that’s two things.

Funniest thing you have heard/seen your boys do?
We were at a store with 2 other couple-friends that have small kids, and
Max wanted to touch something on the shelf and I told him, “No Max,
that’s for grown-ups.”
He replied (loud enough for everyone in the store to hear) “And when I’m
a grown-up, I can drink “grown-up drink” (that’s what we call beer), and
I will have hair on my peepee.” He had just turned 3 at the time.

noodle smart. I think they’re called Penne noodles.

No sad/sick/abused babies or kids anywhere.

Favorite vacation destination?
The Pacific Northwest in the summer.

Twenty years ago you were…..
9 years old living in Oak Harbor either making a driftwood fort at the

Friday Face: Cora Anne Glass

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

I have some pretty incredible women on both sides of my family, especially in the grandmother, cousin and aunt departments. On each side I’ve got two girl cousins. Megan and Danielle are sisters and Chaya and Cora are sisters. I’ve got stinky brothers.

Anywhoodle, one of my fab girl cousins, Cora, is this week’s Friday Face. She’s awesome. Cora lives in Bellingham and goes to WWU and recently decided to join in the family business. Her sister is 25 today  (yay, Chaco!) and Cora is the youngest grandchild on the Elvrum side of the family.  Isn’t that enough to want to know more about her?  She’s very creative, laid back and funny. She is also very thoughtful. Cora’s got gorgeous blue eyes and skin that tans at the hint of sun.

I present to you CORA ANNE GLASS!!!

cora

Name:
Cora Anne Glass

Nickname(s):
Coco, Cokes, ‘Lil Chach, Corca, Cookie, Crocks, Coocoo, okay, now I’m just making them up.

Birthday: 18 September, 1987

CORA

Song that Describes you: I’ve been really into this band, Nana Grizol, for the past few weeks and sometimes I feel like the song writer, Theo Zumm, directly quotes things I’ve written down. Here’s one of my favorites: http://www.ifyoumakeit.com/video/nana-grizol/blackbox-/

Best vacation Destination: Well, although I have been fortunate enough to travel all over the world with my family, I still say Anacortes, Washington based on the past few months. Flip and Janet have been nice enough to host my friends and me when we need to get out Bellingham for really relaxing weekends spent in the little house and exploring the area.dadcora
Favorite item in your closet?
I would have to say my favorite item is my sequin skirt. I found it at a check out stand (still can’t believe someone ditched it before leaving) at Value Village and without trying it on, I bought it. It has served many great purposes since then – a few fish costumes and the occasional dance party.

Natalie, Martie, or Emily:

It’s all about Hatalie Elaines.

Life would be simpler if_________.

If I just let things happen to me. I remember when my mom and I drove to school every morning growing up, she would spend a lot of time talking at me – I’m not the best morning person, especially when I was 13. I remember her telling me, “I never just let things happen to me.” My mom taught me that we are all autonomous and there is a lot we can do with this even it means taking extra steps. CORA1
Funniest thing you have ever heard/seen Grandpa do/say?
There are so many good ones. One of my all time favorites is one Chach and I heard at the Santa photo booth where we all work every Christma season. He gets excited when kids are named Hannah because of the classic line, “do you know what Hannah spells backwards?” All the Hannahs think it’s hilarious. Sometimes he gets confused and conversations go like this:

Gingerbread: Santa, you remember Melissa from last year, right?
Santa: Oh, of course I do! Now, do you know how to spell Hannah backwards?
Melissa: …
Gingerbread: Well, that’s a funny question to as Melissa, Santa…
Santa: Oh, right. Let’s try your name! Melissa backwards is… A-S-S-I-L-E-M!
Melissa: …
CORA3
Best part about having a sister?
I would say the picture messages she sends me to ask if I like her outfit that day or our hit radio show,’The Fred & Fred Show’, but I don’t want to embarrass her on HB Adventure. Actually, since it’s her birthday today, I’d like to give a shout out to our annual birthday sister mall walking tradition. Every year on Chach’s birthday, we strap on our white sneaks, visors and take a few laps around the mall  before stores open up. It started one year when we got to the mall too early and decided to walk around. When we saw lots of 60+ people power-walking past us, we realized we accidentally mall walked – best accident ever. Can’t wait to cruise Bellis Fair today.

Youngest grandchild perks?
My high school graduation was less embarrassing, I think. The family kind of lost its steam by 2006 after four other graduations. My posters were smaller and I didn’t see any custom ties. Although some youngest grandchildren may view this lessened performance as a sign of being forgotten, I see it as a sign of respect. cora
Favorite Bellingham spot?

I’m really into my backyard these days, but I think I’m really just into anywhere where that there is sunlight after the dark winter. However, when there isn’t sun and I’m studying, I really like Avellino on Railroad, a really lovely coffee shop with delicious teas and enormous cinnamon rolls. And of course there’s Clayton Beach, the bricks warmed by the sun outside the Performing Arts Center on campus and in Chach’s bed watching rom-coms.
cora
What are you really good at? / How did you learn this?
I consider myself to be one of the greatest photographers in the world. No, but, I really do enjoy taking photos and it’s something I work hard on. I spent a lot of time researching which camera I wanted and I have read my manual cover to cover. Also, I feel like the people in my life are especially attractive and that makes for excellent photos. Most photography skills I learned are self-taught, but I have a lot of friends that are into photography and we swap ideas sometimes. I also make incredible scrambled eggs, if I don’t say so myself – and that’s just something that came to me naturally, like breathing, really.

What are you scared of?
I’m scared that the people I love don’t know how much I love them. I think about it all the time because I know how it feels to be loved. It’s funny how we have so many different ways to communicate with each other – cell phones, email, Skype, post-it notes, singing, letters, but, I still feel like everything gets lost in the process. It starts to sound trite when we end phone calls with ‘I love you’ every time. I always think of how my Zayda used to tell us he loved us. He would put his hands on our shoulders and look right into our eyes and say, “I LOVE you.” It was a capital love that shook the ground. That was a love I could feel and something I think of when I try to tell the people I love how much I really do love them.zayda

Friday Face: Lara Knowles

Friday, May 15th, 2009

For today’s Friday Face we have somebody super special: Lara Knowles (formerly Braski). I’ve known Lara for decades. We met in 3rd grade when Lara started school at Fidalgo Elementary. Almost instantly we became friends and she joined our tribe of girls that continues today.

Palace Gals

Lara is a friend that always makes me laugh. My parents always could tell I was talking on the phone with her because I’d cackle and laugh, laugh, laugh. Hours were spent on the phone dissecting our lives.  We practiced slow dancing together  before our first dance in 7th grade.   We were locker partners and eventually roommates at The Palace. Oh, the stories we have from our years together.

Lara has many nicknames, a love of music and a caring nature that makes you love being her friend!

I present to you Lara!!!!

Name: Lara Knowles
Date of Birth: May 10, 1980
Job: 4th grade Teacher

What are you really good at?

I think I’m a really good dancer. I’ve also been known to be pretty good at spelling backwards, billiards, and pumpkin art.

Do you have Favorite book?

I’m not a huge reader, but once in a while I get into a really good book. I loved Memoirs of a Geisha.

What is the most attractive thing about your husband?
Aside from how hot he is, I love his laugh. It’s one of those laughs that you just start laughing with even if what your laughing at is not funny. I just love it.

larc

Favorite childhood memory?
Spending summers in Crescent Bar with my family and friends.

crescent-bar

What is one thing you will never understand?
How to do a Rubik’s Cube. My husband could probably do them blindfolded. I’ve tried, but then my brain started to hurt, so I stopped.

What is on your current playlist?
I’m really diggin’ the Robert Plant Raising Sand album. Also, The Kings of Leon, Verve Remixed, Adele, The Police, with a little Beyonce and Flo Rida mixed in.

If you had to live somewhere for the rest of your life where would it be?
I can’t imagine living anywhere else than where I’m at right now. I love the PNW, and I love the house we’re living in. I’d like to just stay put, moving stresses me out anyway.

Best vacation destination?
Cabo San Lucas! Marc and I went to Cabo on our honeymoon, and we loved it!

At 5:00 Lara is: usually getting home from work and unwinding with the dogs or making dinner.

Friday Face on a Sunday: Mom

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

I’m borrowing Nie’s Friday Face idea and am kicking it of (on a Sunday, I know) with my lovely MOM! Read on to learn a bit more about my fantastic mom!

Hannah & Mom on boat

Name: Janet  Elvrum

Hometown: Anacortes

Children:  Phillip Whitman aka “the dedalator”
Hannah Jean the beauty queen or ” The Little”
Izak Perry,”Skron”

What are you most proud of as a mother?
The unique individuals that my children have become, witnessing the kindness and love they  share with their partners .

fidge & HannahIs there anything that you would have done differently?
There’s a lot that I should have done differently, more like it.

What is the best part about being a mother?
I love getting to know my children as they are now.

What is the most difficult part about being a mother?
I think the biggest challenge is when there  have been difficulties in their personal life and I need to stay out of it since they are adults now.  Nurturing from a distance instead of  the comforts of the nest that we provided in the growing up years.

When did you realize that you weren’t a kid anymore?
When I was told that I was a good candidate for a new hip joint.

What is one quality of your mom that you admire most?
I love my mother’s fun loving attitude and love of spontaneity.

Midge, Fidge & HJE

What way are you and your children alike? Different?
I am very different from Phil and Izak. Sometimes I wonder who the heck hatched them. They have far fetched ideas that they can pull off and get  away with accomplishing. Hannah is very communicative and we like a lot of the same things, maybe it is because we are women . But really I wonder  about those boys sometimes.
Elvrum Kids

What is a challenging thing you’ve done in your life that you are proud of?
I stick to things that come easy or that are fun.I tend to run away from stressful situations if I can. Climbing mountains and river rafting were challenging and a ton of fun. I wish I could add a few more  things to my list like those.

Ben NevisFavorite part of your home?
I love the patio in the spring and summer, which is now, but in the winter I love the kitchen area.

What is your favorite time of day?

I love the early morning hours when the birds sing and the rest of the house is still asleep.

hobuckFavorite vacation destination?

I don’t like to go to the same place over and over. Someplace warmer in the winter months… that is a priority…where we can swim and eat fresh fruits.
