Kurt & Debbie Got Married!!!!

Kurt and Debbie got hitched this past weekend (along with Barry finishing a half Ironman!) and it was simply perfect! Although there are many, many stories that were woven into the weekend, the one that stands out is the fact that Jeff was the one to marry them!! Nobody had any clue and it was a fun surprise for our group of friends.

Jeff did a great job and it was fun to hear how the whole thing evolved and how they all kept it a secret for so long. So, if you need to get married please feel free to contact Pastor/Rabbi/Bishop Bahl. I’m sure he’d be glad to come to your wedding.

I’m not entirely sure what I’m going to give Kurt a hard time about now that he and Deb are married, but I have no doubt that I’ll find something. I love the picture of Mags with both of them, she looks like she could be their kid. Except we know that their kid is going to look exactly like all of Kurt’s siblings with red hair and Maggie doesn’t fit that mold.

It was a great wedding and many, many happy blessings to Kurt and Debbie!

Enjoy the rest of the photos!!

Communicating With the Wee One

Maggie’s ability to communicate with us has become more and more apparent with each passing day and most recently she has picked up on a few snippets of sign language that we’ve used. The first time she signed ‘more’ to me I almost fell off of my chair.  Now, she is signing with emotion mixed in and we’re pretty amazed. We hadn’t planned on using sign language with her, but now that she seems to be catching on I almost want to jog down to the corner store and pick up an ASL manual. I won’t, of course.

One of her favorite games to play with lately is Night-Night. Basically, she’ll put her head down for a moment, act like she’s sleeping and pop up with a huge smile on her face, expecting us to greet her with a hearty, “Good Morning!!”. Which we do, of course. This gets repeated over and over with her big smile growing with each round. Without fail, we end the game laughing because Maggie is such a cheese-ball and her being able to ham-it-up is pretty hilarious.

Just last night I was rubbing her back as she fell asleep in her bed, and I leaned down to kiss her cheek (because it was just SO kissable!) and right after I did it, her eyes popped open! For a split second I regretted kissing her kissable cheek, but then Maggie flashed one of her full-faced grins, happy to be kissed apparently, and dozed off for the final time. I almost had to bite my tongue from letting out a horrible cackle-laugh, which would have for sure woken the sleeping babe. She is so full of happiness, which in turn makes our whole entire family happy.

Aside from the Night Night game and new words showing up with high frequency, Maggie has also discovered the power behind her words, trying on many words for size, favoring words that get results. Just this morning she convinced Barry that she needed MORE cookie….a daughter after her daddy’s heart. He gave it to her, of course.

We had somebody comment to us once about waiting until Maggie is 18 months old, when her personality would ‘really’ show up.  Barry put it perfectly when he said that he was a little bit scared of what life will be like at 18 months – because The Littlest Morsel is definitely not lacking in the personality department these days.

A Picnic in Devils Lake

I feel like if I don’t sit down immediately to document an event, I tend to move onwards and upwards quickly. As I look at these pictures of our picnic in Devils Lake I can’t help but wish I would have written down things that aren’t obvious in the pictures.

Now that we’re back in the saddle again, so to speak, and doing things like swimming lessons and story time, it makes our trip to North Dakota seem all the more surreal and far away. I have no doubt that Maggie has wondered where all her peeps went and I certainly miss everyone too. I think next time we check into a hotel, Maggie is going to go knocking on a bunch of different doors to see if she can find all her family members that were our “neighbors” these past two weeks.

It was great to see Phil and Izak both with Maggie, Phil taking her into his arms to explore and point to her heart’s content.  Both my brothers are so tender with her in very different ways, Izak still a bit unsure about handling a munchkin. Either way, they both love on her and that’s what matters most.

Anyhow, nearly 65 Elvrums met up at a park to eat potato salad, play horse shoes and try to make connections to where on the Elvrum Family Tree we’re connected. All of my grandfather’s siblings were there and I believe all of his first cousins. I joked to Barry on the phone that if he listened carefully he might have been able to hear us all. We’re just not a quiet group of people.

It was super sweet to see my grandparents be reunited with some of the people that they grew up with, telling stories and smiling from ear to ear. It made me wonder what I’ll be doing in another 50 years and what stories will carry my friends, family and me into old age. Will the stories get better with age? More detailed?

Who really knows. Maybe some of our North Dakota shenanigans will be talked about. Glendive, anyone? All I can say is that the day in the park, eating pounds of potato salad, was simply marvelous, mostly because we weren’t driving and my grandparents were extremely happy. By the time Maggie and I went back to our hotel room we looked like we’d rolled in the sandy part of the volleyball court and we took a shared bath, scrubbing away all the dirt and grime.

Later, when we all were sharing what our favorite moments from the trip were, my grandpa said that what enjoyed most was sitting around after the picnic with his brothers and cousins telling old stories. I wish I would have gotten a picture of it, but just hearing about it will have to do.
